We feel this is a very important section of our Canton museum.
As long as there have been art and antiques, there have been problems verifying what is authentic.
The practice of painting marks on porcelain on a regular basis was established during the Xuande reign near the beginning of the Ming period, in the early 15th century.
The mark usually consisted of the reign title of the emperor and the name of the dynasty.
In the first division written in ‘kai-shu’ (regular or modern script), the mark consists of six characters written in two columns of three characters.
It is read from right to left and in descending order.
This is followed by the two characters giving the reign title of the ruling emperor. Also it would help to take a pottery making class or two to really understand the actual processes involved in making porcelains.Chinese ceramics range from construction materials such as bricks and tiles, to hand-built pottery vessels fired in bonfires or kilns, to the sophisticated Chinese porcelain wares made for the imperial court and for export. The fifth character reads ‘nian’ (year) and the final character reads ‘zhi’ (made/manufactured).The mark below should be read as follows: This translates as “made in the reign of Kangxi (reign title of the second Qing emperor) in the Great Qing dynasty”.Chinese ceramics show a continuous development since pre-dynastic times and are one of the most significant forms of Chinese art and ceramics globally.
